Articles: Tips & Tricks

What the heck do we do?

We have had some great compliments about our newsletter as well as a number of new clients who have built their knowledge and understanding through our articles.

It is hard to explain what we at Net Action do and how we can help but hopefully our articles help with your understanding of some issues you hadn’t even considered. And the sort of things we can assist with.

If you have any issues, concerns or aspirations for making your website perform better for you, please get in touch. We can assist with almost anything including a whole lot of things that you are probably not even aware of. Just ask what we can do for you. Or check out our services, case studies and testimonials at http://www.netaction.co.nz.

Password security – have you been hacked?

Many major companies have had their databases hacked and info stolen (eg Adobe, various banks and credit companies, govt agencies).

How do you know if you are on a hacked list that is now public?

We have found a site that checks against the main known hacked lists and tells you if you are on them.

The site is https://haveibeenpwned.com/

As far as I can see from checking and reading about it, it is a safe site to use but make your own decision (we checked it and we are there for the Adobe hacked list – we have registered Adobe products previously).

Ransomware Hacking

The latest hacking trend seems to be to hijack your computer, then encrypt your files so you can’t read them. Then demand a ransom to un-encrypt them. This can be from hundreds to thousands of dollars.

And of course if you pay up once they may do it to you again or not fix them for you.

Regularly backing up your data is the best protection! Do you do that?

Also run reliable, regularly updated Antivirus and security software.

Search for “protection from ransomware” for information about how to prevent it happening to you.

Adobe Flash Issues. The end of Flash?

Flash is frequently used to display streaming video, advertisement and interactive multimedia content on web pages – the whole site will not be broken but images and video might be.

How to unsend an email

Have you ever sent an email and then immediately regretted it or realised you made a mistake in the content? I know of someone who ended up in a nasty defamation case because of that – they replied to the wrong person with an imprudent email.

Well Gmail is making Undo Send a standard feature. What it actually does is delay the message send for up to 30 seconds to give you a chance to change your mind. You determine the time in your general settings. Kind of a cooling off period.

Following a general rule of email etiquette will help you as well and mean that you won’t need this feature. Never write anything in an email that would embarrass you if it ended up in the wrong person’s mailbox. Emails frequently get forwarded to a number of other people so can easily go somewhere you were not expecting them to end up. Always assume that that could happen and write emails accordingly.

Google Analytics and Robots

We have reported in the past about visits from some robots recording in your Analytics statistics reports and biasing your sessions and referrals data.

We are seeing more and more of these escaping Google’s methods to try to exclude them. For one client these amounted to 30% of their traffic!

If you are seeing lots of sessions from Brazil it is probably visits from semalt.com and not real visitors
