Objection to Increasing Commissions on bookings

Tourism Accommodation Australia (TAA) is calling on travellers to bypass Online Travel Agencies (OTA’s) like Booking.com and to book direct in response to recent commission rate increases.

Expedia and Priceline dominate the OTA market so are now in a position where they can dictate the terms even more and have recently increased commission rates. Expedia now owns Wotif and Priceline owns Agoda and Hooroo.

TAA is making a case with ACCC (Commerce regulator) to ensure that the OTAs don’t follow the European and US trends where booking commissions have now reached 20% plus.

From recent discussions with our clients, we know how concerned operators are about increase in the amount of commissions they are now paying and looking for ways to maximise direct bookings from their own websites.

How to unsend an email

Have you ever sent an email and then immediately regretted it or realised you made a mistake in the content? I know of someone who ended up in a nasty defamation case because of that – they replied to the wrong person with an imprudent email.

Well Gmail is making Undo Send a standard feature. What it actually does is delay the message send for up to 30 seconds to give you a chance to change your mind. You determine the time in your general settings. Kind of a cooling off period.

Following a general rule of email etiquette will help you as well and mean that you won’t need this feature. Never write anything in an email that would embarrass you if it ended up in the wrong person’s mailbox. Emails frequently get forwarded to a number of other people so can easily go somewhere you were not expecting them to end up. Always assume that that could happen and write emails accordingly.

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) Scams

You probably receive a number of emails every day offering SEO services. While many of these are genuine companies vying for your business, some really are scammers who will take your money and do nothing.

Every website needs SEO services (and more). There are some good reputable companies in NZ who provide great SEO services, including us.

It is therefore galling when we see overseas scammers pretending to be NZ companies and giving good SEO companies here a bad rap.

We have recently received numerous emails from Creative Zeald Ltd who claim to have an office at
Level 4, 147 Parnell Road, Parnell 1052, Auckland.New Zealandwith other offices in Christchurch | Wellington | Hamilton | Tauranga & Dunedin
and a global presence in Hong Kong & China | USA | AUS | UAE | Singapore

This is almost identical to numerous emails previously received from Page Port NZ Ltd. They were apparently headquartered in Napier with offices in Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Manawatu-Whanganui, Wellington, Tasman, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Canterbury, Otago, Southland. Wow! Such a busy company that no-one has heard of!

Both of these are overseas companies and do not have the NZ representation they claim. They are passing off as something that they are not. If not a total scam, it is certainly spam.

Don’t touch overseas SEO companies unless you know something about them. Get references if you can. Some will just take your money or lock you into long contracts.
