Web Marketing - Google Page Rank
Date: 3 April 2008

Most of you probably receive many requests from people wanting you to link to their web site. Often they make a really big point about Google Page Rank (which is rated between 1 and 10, with 10 being the best.)

Page Rank is just one small factor that Google uses in determining whether your site should appear near the top of search results. That is why you will often find pages with low page rank higher in results than pages with high page rank.

Instead of being fixated only on page rank, you should strive to build a quality site with good focussed content. Good site optimisation, including good keyword focussed text, and great content seems to be far more important in getting high positions in search results than Google page rank.. Good page rank will follow naturally if you do the other things well.

There are articles and anecdotal evidence that people at Google have even said that it is not important at all and that it may be a bit of a gimmick. Whether that is true or not, just remember that it is just one small part of the big web marketing jigsaw.

Link exchanges with related sites of lower rank are probably better than link exchanges with higher page rank sites that are on totally unrelated topics to your site.
