What is Site Optimisation?
Date: 18 June 2007

Once your website is built by your developer there may be more work required to “optimise” your site for search engines. This is called site optimisation, search engine optimisation (SEO) or “SEM”. Some developers understand the need for optimisation and web site marketing, others do not. Some may do it as part of their site development, others won’t.

The main aim of optimising your site is to ensure that it is "search engine friendly" and to maximise its potential profile in the search engines. This increases the chances of users finding your site when they do a search. It is one of the main reasons that some sites come up at the top of the search results and others never appear. If your site comes up near the top for relevant searches, it is likely that more people will visit it and consider your product. Search engine results are the main way that people will find your site.

Site optimisation involves:

Researching keywords and search terms that will help users find your site

Writing customised title tags and Meta tags

Reviewing and optimising page content for keywords

Resolving technical issues which may be affecting search engines’ ability to “read” your site. For example, search engines cannot read the words which are in scanned images.

To understand more about site optimisation, it is important to understand at least a little of how search engines work.
