Unsolicited Electronic Messages Act 2007
Date: 15 August 2007
This act is due to come in to force on 5 Sept 2007 to help control spam generated in New Zealand.
Essentially it tries to prevent people sending emails to anyone who has not opted in to an email list or advertised their email address publicly.
It also tries to ensure that the sender is clearly identified and provides clear instructions for the recipient to “opt out” if applicable. Contact information such as a phone number should also be included.
This act may have implications for you if you have an email mailing list with addresses you have collected in the past. Email marketing is a highly effective tool but must be used responsibly. A client has recommended Debbie Mayo-Smith’s book “Successful Email Marketing” as full of great tips if you have time to implement them. Unfortunately it looks like it is now out of print but you may find it in a bookshop or library somewhere.
More information on the new Act is available at

There is some criticism being aimed at the Act by others as it does perhaps make it more difficult to promote businesses in some cases.. I guess we all have no choice but to just see how it works in reality.
How does the Act affect this newsletter?
This is an “opt in” email list so if you are receiving this email, it is because you have opted in at some stage in the past. If this is not the case, or you do not wish to receive this newsletter, please unsubscribe now using either of the following links. We will remove you from the list.
