Email addresses
Date: 29 October 2007

Wherever possible, try to use “enduring” email addresses like info@yoursite.co.nz or marketing@yoursite.co.nz instead of something like personsname@yoursite.co.nz. In other words, where possible, use a generic one for the website which will never change.

Otherwise, email address “rot” can occur everytime a staff member leaves. This can lose you business and other worthwhile contacts. If you do use personal names, ensure that you have a “catchall” email account set up so that even if the person leaves, the email is redirected to your main email address for the site.

Also ensure that the email address on your web site actually works – we find a remarkable number that don’t when we are testing sites and editing submissions. Try it out – don’t just assume that the developer has got it right!
