In the good (or bad?) ole days (before Google), Search Engine Optimisation was all about submitting your website to numerous search engines and directories (like Yahoo, Alta Vista, Excite and many more), keyword use and link building.

Since the Google Panda and Penguin updates in 2011 and 2012 and in 2013 the Hummingbird update, it is about different things. And about different ways of working with some of the same things.

Link farms, keyword stuffing and mass automated submissions have always been bad – it is just that since Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird and probably future updates, Google is penalising sites more for those bad practices if you have engaged in any of them. These are typically referred to as Black Hat SEO methods, something that we have never used.

One thing that is still highly relevant for a successful website is that “Content is King”. Always has been and hopefully always will be! You need to have a great site content that gives the user the information that they are looking for in order to convert them to sales.

And whether you like doing it or not, Social Media engagement is important. Particularly Google + – you scratch their back, they may scratch yours!

Under the Hummingbird update it also looks as though Google is possibly rewarding sites that have mobile versions available to users.

Many of the other factors like use of keywords and links still have relevance though.
