Monitoring your business on Social Media

Almost everything tells you that you need to be actively engaged in Social Media.

If you are, then you should be closely monitoring what is being said about your business all the social channels. Monitoring reviews and responding to these can be critical to the success or otherwise of your business. According to one US study, businesses that respond to a complaint on social media see a 20% increase in advocacy. But businesses that did not respond to a complaint, saw a 43% decrease in advocacy.

Monitoring social media can be a very time consuming process but there are some tools that can help you to do this more efficiently.

Google + changes

Google have been under continuing pressure from large sites about how “Google pushes it’s own barrow in its search results”.
eg much of the space on the 1st page is taken up with Google Adwords and / or Google Local Search results, Google Images etc.

So Google has recently succumbed to some of this pressure and changed a few things in the Search Results pages (Serps). We don’t know if these are permanent or just an experiment (they won’t tell anyone of course).

Changes they have made are mostly in Local Search results, which have been a good way to get on page 1 for free. They were showing up to 7 results here, but have now reduced this to 3. This is also to make results more mobile friendly – 3 fits better than 7.

And your business’s Google + page is not linked directly from these anymore.

That makes it even more important to try to ensure that you are in these Local results and that your Google + page is effective (it affects this). And Google reviews can affect this – more good reviews on your Google + page affects if you are in the top 3 local results displayed. So keep on focusing on encouraging customer reviews for your business on your Google+ page.

Google has also split out the photo component of your Google+ Page into a standalone product called Google Photos.

We know there are some great innovative tourism products out there as well as some more traditional ones with interesting “back stories”. Or people in the industry with interesting passions and “back stories”

For example, you might be a B&B or restaurant with an olive oil plant and tastings. Tell us about your olive oil in that case.

Or a dive company writing about the marine life where you take your dive tours.

Maybe you have a heritage building with an interesting restoration story or history. Or some interesting cuisine speciality or location.

Human interest stories welcome – if you have a real skill or passion about something related to your business or tourism, let us know about it.

Buying Facebook Likes

We received an email from a company called Domain Services offering to sell us

500 Facebook Likes= $30USD
1000 Facebook Likes= $50USD
2000 Facebook Likes= $90USD
5000 Facebook Likes= $200USD

They also offered us Twitter followers stating that “Followers will help you to make your page look more popular on social networking sites.”

Yes, followers will help, but buying likes, followers or reviews is against the terms and conditions of most social media sites and they actively police it. This practice could see you penalised by Facebook, Twitter, TripAdvisor, Google and others.

Don’t be tempted by this!

Also don’t be tempted by sites or emails offering to submit you to many thousand search engines. Bad practice that can negatively impact your site traffic!

Buying Fake Reviews / Likes / Follows

We provided a warning last month about buying fake reviews on TripAdvisor. Since then numerous organisations like Tourism NZ and Tourism Coromandel have repeated the warning.

So just a reminder – don’t be tempted, Trip Advisor will not tolerate fake reviews and your site will suffer if they find any.

Similarly you should not buy follows or likes on any other Social Media sites. It is not legitimate and it is being watched for.

Google+ is Google’s own social network (& competitor to Facebook). But also much more importantly, Google Plus is what Google is using more and more to connect all of its products like YouTube, Google Maps, Images etc and as such it has more influence on Google’s overall rankings of your business in its search results.
